UnitSwap's conversion system works by first converting a unit into the base unit of its category, usually from the International System of Units (kilograms for mass, meters for length, etc.). UnitSwap then converts from the base unit, into the unit specified by the user. To perform these calculations, UnitSwap's converters utilize decimal.js, which is an arbitrary-precision decimal type for made for the programming language, JavaScript. In scientific mode, UnitSwap utilizes 20 decimal places of precision (which is deicmal.js's default). In non-scientific mode, the same precision is used but the result is rounded to around 5 decimal places (the amount shown depends on the size of the number).
As mentioned, UnitSwap uses the exact definition of each unit to perform the calculations, which is usually legally or scientifically defined. UnitSwap usually references Wikipedia text, which is double-checked against its citation to ensure its accuracy (or double-checked mathematically if applicable). In cases where the value given by Wikipedia cannot be verified, additional research is done to confirm its validity.
